Cher Lloyd: The Brits Get the Better Version

We here at PopJudgment are big fans of UK pop stars who have little to no presence here in the U.S. This means that since Cher Lloyd’s appearance on UK X Factor in 2010, we have been kind of obsessed with her. Cher is 18 years old and maybe kind of a brat but is also very cute and clearly very talented.

Cher Lloyd has decided to finally grace the US with her presence and she does so with… a very strange video. We did some investigating because we really do like the song, but the music video was strange – and then we discovered that there is another, secret UK video! Well… it’s not really secret. But there is a significantly better UK version. Below are the videos, and as you watch them, you, like us, might ponder, why did she make the second video? Why is the UK version so much cuter? What does this say about her perception of America?????

A Quick Comparison:

• So for starters, in the weird US version, we were distracted because we were wondering, is that the same diner that they filmed Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You” in? We think so.
• Everything is slightly hipster-fied in the US one. Note: the boyfriend has ear gages in this one.

• Cher in the first video is cute and seems to just be kind of playfully messing with old picture. In the second video she is diabolically trying to destroy the new girlfriend’s life. Why, Cher? Why? She isn’t even cute!
• What on earth is Cher wearing in the diner in the US version? All of her outfits in the UK one are super cute, but that black getup is straight up weird.
• Let’s talk about Astro. We didn’t watch the X Factor US because of Cheryl Cole being fired (LOYALTY, PEOPLE), but apparently this is a 15-year-old rapper who appeared on the first season of US X Factor. What he is doing in Cher Lloyd’s UK video is unclear, but his presence is hilarious (especially since he looks 10) and much appreciated in place of the weird repetition Cher does to fill his spot in the US version.

In sum, why does the US version make us more uncomfortable? Are we secretly British? Or is the US version just poorly made while the UK one is awesome? We have come to the conclusion that Cher Lloyd has a fully developed public persona in Britain of being the cute girl who likes hip-hop from X Factor. However, her marketing scheme in the US is not really planned out yet… hence this odd video. Try again lads, please. Or don’t. Just market Cher Lloyd in the US the same way that you do in the UK! We will TOTALLY buy her album!
